Featured Picniker – KrisD Mauga
KrisD, our 13th Featured Picniker, is the second professional photographer using Picnik for her business! She lives in Belmont Heights, in Long Beach, with her husband and four-year-old daughter. She’s always been into the arts, and studied art, landscaping, and architecture at various colleges in Southen California, including Cal Poly Pomona and Santa Barbara City. She’s been drawing and painting since her childhood, but finds that since having her daughter she uses her photography as her canvas and editing tools (and Picnik!) as her media.
This background in fine art has definitely informed her photography, as she considers herself more of a photographic artist than a photographer since her real passion finds its expression in tuning her images with artistic effects, which is readily evident perusing her Flickr photostream. Collage, Cinemascope, Cross Process, and a fair amount of Reala 400 (a preset Curves effect in the Advanced section of Create), each one of her photographs is exquisitely turned out, whether brides, expectant mothers, children, or chihuahuas in shades. And all this using Picnik, and for her business as well! We were all so impressed we just had to pick her for our lucky 13th Featured Picniker.
Picnik: When did you hear about Picnik, and when was that?
KrisD: Last year through Flickr and my friend Charla of CharlaBlue Photography or maybe I told her about it; I can’t remember.
How has Picnik changed your life?
I love the diversity of actions! The software is so easy to use and you get beautiful, dramatic, professional results!
How did you get interested in photography?
I guess I’ve always liked taking photos; recently someone I knew from high school said they remember me always carrying a camera around. In 2000 my husband and I traveled to Europe, and the landscapes were so inspirational; we would try to out-shoot the other. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I considered it as a career. I have to thank my sister Karlee and best friend Charla for motivating me; they both showed me you just have to go for it!
What do you use to shoot with?
Canon DSLR’s- I have 3. My 1st DSLR was the Canon 40D. I shot my 1st wedding last year. Within the first 3 minutes my 40D malfunctioned; luckily I’d rented a back-up! The next day I bought 2 more DSLR’s for back-ups — Canon 10D & Canon D60. I love all of them! My next DSLR will be the Canon 5D Mark II!
You do weddings, kids, portraits, puppies and more. What’s your favorite subject?
I love them all. I shoot so many subjects because it keeps my interest. If I were to choose my favorite — I would say pregnancy sessions! I think pregnant woman are beautiful and I love capturing them at this special moment in their life.
What did you like most about Picnik when you first started using it, and what do you like the most about it now?
I loved the variety of actions. Picnik works so well integrating many other online formats. I use Picasa, Flickr, Facebook and everything is available through Picnik!
What’s easier: babies or animals?
Babies and animals — hhmm… It really depends on the moment; both can be challenging, but then there are the good days when it all just seems to work and you get a portfolio of great shots!
If anything on Picnik could be named after you, what would it be?
Reala 400!!! It’s bold, vibrant and dimensional; kind of like me.
California’s got a lot of varied locations to photograph in: cities, beaches, mountains, deserts, small towns, ranches, farms, movie lots… If you had to choose one, which would you pick?
I’d choose right where I am now. I get to shoot a city on the beach with mountains in the background; I have it all here!

Great edits! I’m learning that more an more pros are using Picnik because of its ease of use… I had been apprehensive because it seemed ‘too good to be true”, but wow, it just keeps getting better and better!! Wow- thanks for all your compliments and support! As for #4 -the purple tint- I applied blk-n-wht, then magenta fade(about 60%), then auto-fixed the exposure to bring the depth back.
Seriously- it’s trial and error and love mix matching effects! If I figure something out I love- then I do it again and again…but I am always trying to find a new technique or style.

Just checked back and saw many questions on HOW I do create some of these (especially the baby one top). USE CURVES!!!!! Go to “create”, then “advance”, then “curves”. There are many options in “curves”- my favorite being “reala 400″. In this particular case I did custom and shot the curveline up-creating the over exposure style. Then I went into edits and I used the “boost” effect and click on “reverse effects” then use the painting tool to only boost the eyes. Upgrade to premium if you want to have these effects! Curves & painting effects allow for you to have complete control!

I love your work; very professional shots! I am a retired teacher who also loves photography. Two years ago, my husband convinced me it was time to take the leap and open my own photography business which I did. I’ve had so much fun since then. My love of photography came from my grandfather who was a prof. photographer.
I am so impressed with Picnik as an editing/creative program. I have many programs that are high end, yet Picnik does it all!!!

i love your pictures! each of your pictures has a different message to them. do you have tips for taking pics of people (besides the kind of camera)? i am better at plants and such but i have some really great ones of NYC. the thing i struggle with is portraits. i know it is partly because i have a pretty inexpensive digital camera but do you have any other tips for me?

Wow, your stuff is great! I’ve only used Picnik to edit pics for my garden decorative items supply store and have found it to be the easiest to use of those I have tried. You have given me some inspiration to try it for other uses like photos of family and landscapes. I didn’t realize what a valuable application is was. Thanks!

I had never used Reala 400 before I saw your featured piece on picnik. I LOVE IT. I use it over and over again. I just shot my first wedding last month and I’m using that feature A LOT in my edits. It makes for some amazing photos! Thanks for sharing!

Hello, I was wondering If you have ever had a problem when you develope your pictures when you use picassa, piknic or another photoediting software program? I seem to just get the picture the way I like it,then I get it developed & its not the same…Sometimes its pixelated,blurred or just plain the wrong colors? also what is the reala 400 that you are talking about? & where do you find it? Thank you for your time,as I am an aspiring photographer in Iowa.

I cannot afford a digital photography ccamera,
so i have an old pentax camera which i get my photos developed, and then scan them into my friends computer.

I’ve given tips on how to acheive the baby effect and reala 400 curves use. As I wish I had time to answer each of these, I apologize I do not. I also DO NOT edit pictures for others, I’m sorry.

I am new to photo editing. I love all of you photos, i know that it is not just the editing, but you as a photographer, but the editing helps i guess. How did you do the blue eyes on the baby. I adore your edts :) it gives the whole site a different complextion :) I love to edit photos of my favorite ponies :) And recently i have become much better :) i am sooo lucky that my school is a media arts college :) because i also love video editing, photography, drama and the like! Oh, and riding, and riding, and oh, did i mention riding? I am the youngest in the highest riding lesson and after every lesson i take a portrait of the horse to edit later with all we did written on it in faded italic text :0 but i have to do this sharpish so i can go and get on working at the yard :)

Wow! I’m really into photography as well, i have a Nikon D3000. I agree that taking the photos is amazing, but editing them just makes it worth while.

Hi KrisD:) My names Arianna and i am a middle school student . I love photography and i hope some day to become a famous photographer . I never found me self as a very artistic person , but just because i cant draw great and sculpt statues doesnt mean i cant be a visual artist . I think i get my artistic side from my moms sister . Your pictures are amazing! They have inspired me SO much. Im only in middle school now, but i really want to be a photographer when im older. I have my camera with me almost all of the time. I think i have good pictures, but when i see your photography, my pictures aren’t that great. Haha. But im in love with your work. When i first saw one of your photos, i thought it was just black and white with colored eyes. But i looked more closely and its just a white color. I love it! Hi Kris,
I just wanted to compliment you on your wonderful photos and thank you for the inspiration. I am a premium member and because of your advice I have been exploring the curves tools in the advanced section that I was too timid to try before. I’ve done the Reala 400 and the Magenta fade which are both awesome and now I’m trying all of the presets and manually manipulating the curves. Now if only I could shoot raw images as well as you do! But that’s a whole different topic! :)

Your work is magnificent, its beautiful without the editing, but of course it gives it it’s own edge. I love how you really capture the moment and precise angle. I mostly likes the women looking down because of the unusual angle it was taken from and i simply adore anything thats in black and white, and the picture of the moving bus(or a train, I am not very sure), because of the illusion made by the light.

not making them better or that merely playing around.
The Jasmine Villegas was a good one.

Tengo fotos mejor tomadas y editadas que esas… y son tomadas con mi celular blackberry pearl. Así que no trata de la cámara. tampoco he usado los efectos premium ya que soy menor de edad y no tengo tarjeta de crédito como para solicitar los efectos, y si la tuviera no los utilizaría igual, no hace falta… al no tenerlos me he acostumbrado a ingeniármelas para editar fotos con los efector gratis. y estoy seguro que me quedan mucho mejor que como me quedarían con los efectos premium. :)

HI! I love the first picture of the beautiful baby you took. I use picnik exclusively to edit pictures of my kids and can’t figure out how to get a black and white picture to look like this. I know how to make the eyes pop and make them the original picture color but am having trouble making the black and white not look so dark and boring. Is this sepia? I’m just perplexed! I love your photos, i took photography for a semester at my school and i was wondering if there was any site that you found that you dont have to pay for? I wanna keep doing photography but i dont have money to pay for photoshop or these websites

I absolutely love your editing baby and children shots! Curious to know.. Picnik says your favorite effect is Reala 400 Curves.. yet I dont see it as an option and I did upgrade to premium status. Does that effect still exist, I’d like to have it as with my D300s has that type of feature to shoot with.
