Featured Picniker – CJ Wheeler
CJ Wheeler loves horses, but her relationship with them has not always been a happy one. When she was thirteen, she fell from her spooked horse and fractured her skull. She missed a whole year of school to recover from the injuries and couldn’t bring herself to go near a horse for 30 years. But then, with a successful career in radio as the Executive Producer for the Rick Roberts Show in San Diego, she and her husband bought a ranch, complete with empty horse stalls, and she decided it was finally time to overcome her fear of horses. Now along with their cat and two dogs, they have three horses: Tango, Cash and Sasha.
Now using photography to make up for those 30 years without horses in her life, CJ got a new camera for her birthday last year and scoured the internet for a photo editor to use when she found Picnik. And it’s because of Picnik that she’s now started a photography business. Writing in to us only this October to ask how we choose our Featured Picnikers, our Feedbackers introduced her to Flickr, where the success of the striking and dramatic Picniked pictures of her animals inspired her to sell her photos professionally. In just that short amount of time, CJ has already been published in two magazines, will soon be a featured artist at a local Wine and Art festival and sells prints through several local stores. Such an impressive and uplifting story surely needs to be told for our eleventh Featured Picniker!
Picnik: How did you hear about Picnik, and when was that?
CJ: Back in July ‘08 my father bought me a Cannon Rebel XTI for my birthday. I actually left it in the box for 2 months because I knew it would change my life. I knew I would become absorbed by it. Finally in October, I opened the box, and as expected… I became obsessed. I desperately needed a great photo editor and searched online for weeks looking for just the right one. The day I came across Picnik was the day my professional photo career was born.
How has Picnik changed your life?
Dramatically! My photos have never been this good. Picnik allowed me to create shots that far exceeded what my average photo looked like. (For instance this before & after)
It’s because of Picnik that a buzz started online about my shots that pushed me into selling my work…. something I would have NEVER considered before Picnik. People started calling me an “Artist.” I’m still not used to that. I’m just a girl that has always loved taking pictures, and now I spend hours on Picnik obsessing over every little detail before releasing the shots.
Since October ‘08 I’ve been published in Horseman Magazine, I am about to be a featured “artist” in Reins Magazine, won several photo contests on Flickr, am going to be a Featured Artist at Wine and Art show, and sold several of my framed pieces in local tack stores.
I honestly am astonished by people’s reaction to my work (fun). It still is such a huge compliment to think that someone likes my work enough to hang it in their house.
How many people have you got started using Picnik?
I can’t shut up about it!! I tag every single picture on my Flickr page with the Picnik tag. I actually get into fights with “photoshop” folks about Picnik. I just tell them… go to picnik.com… you will see.
How did you get interested in photography?
My Dad. He found his niche in our family by taking pictures. Every holiday, every trip, every time I turned around my dad had the camera up to his face creating memories for everyone. I love him so much for that. He really helped start my interest in photography and modeling. Modeling faded, but photography has been everlasting.
What do you use to shoot with?
Cannon Rebel XTI
If any feature on Picnik were to be renamed after you, which would it be?
Ha ha ha… what a crazy question!! God! To be as brilliant as Michael Orton. Now there’s an artist!
What did you like most about Picnik when you first started using it, and what do you like the most about it now?
Well… this is a little hard to admit… but I like things simple. Dumb it down as much as possible I say! lol. Photography should be fun. A lot of the photo editors out there just confused me. Picnik was so user friendly it was a natural fit for me. Point… click… brilliant!
And I also very much love that I can erase and redo. You can’t make a mistake. Ahhhh… if only Picnik ruled the world.
What’s the secret to photographing animals?
Well.. just like people, different animals bring different challenges and personalities. Taking pictures of dogs is a lot different than taking pictures of horses.
With dogs I find they love eye contact, which makes it hard when you have a camera up to your face. So I generally have a chew toy or stick in my hand and the camera in the other. Also… Dogs love it when you get on there level. Get on the ground, get dirty… it’s fun.
But with horses, it’s a whole other game. Horses are flight animals. They spook at anything… seriously… ANYTHING. My horse Tango is afraid of plastic bags. So you have to take every sound, smell, and action into consideration when photographing horses, especially if they are not in a fence area. Horses are very challenging mentally, but once you get in their heads and think like them, you can figure out their next move, or manipulate them into the shot you want. If you want an excited action shot, bring along that plastic bag. ;) If you want them calm and serene find a green pasture with lots of quiet and their herd around them, and you will be sucked into their peaceful world. That emotion will translate into your pictures if your lucky.
The biggest tip I can give of photographing animals is get to know them. Talk to the owners. Find out what the animal likes and dislikes. Just imagine the horse or dog as a person that can’t talk. You have to pay attention to what they are saying without the words.
What’s the best Picnik effect for life on a ranch?
As you can tell by my pictures I do a lot of silhouettes with dust and bright sun. Horses, dust, sun, and God… you just can’t beat that combination. The effects that best support that are “Soften” “Boost” and “Ortonish.” I also adore that Picnik has an advanced feature with Exposure & Contrast section where you can bring out the “local contrast” and play with shadows and highlights. Local contrast is key to take the bright sun spots out of my pictures, which happens when you shoot in those conditions.
My process on Picnik starts with cropping, goes to exposure and saturation, then into the effects page where I use soften to take down the background, boost to pop the color up by 5 to 10 percent, and then when I think I have it just about right, I always go to “Ortonish” because it never fails to give me a different perspective. If I like Ortonish I keep it. If not… time to sign it in “text” and post it on flick or on my website www.runninghorsepictures.org.

LOVE these images. I LOVE horses, never owned one (small apt. in London didn’t help!) I will show my daughter in the morning who has just started lessons AND I hear you about the photoshop debates, I have them all the time. People can’t believe I do a biz using picnik! They ‘think’ I have to use PS or else it can’t be ‘professional’. I say, you keep editing on PS while I go out and take some more photos!. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! LOL. Thank you guys so much for all the sweet comments. To those of you who have said I hope one day I could take pictures like this… TODAY IS THAT DAY! Ive had a camera in my hands since at least 13, and while your skills might improve, if you are a photographer and you see art and beauty whereever you go, then that is in you. You will take pictures better than these. Have faith, look for the beauty, and take your camera everywhere!

Interesting story about those shots. I was completely lost when I stumbled upon those guys and gals roping cows. See! It pays to always have your camera with you. I saw the dust, horses, sunset, and Cowboys and knew I wasn’t “lost” anymore, but more like where God wanted me to be.

I’ve just started riding horses, and i fell off last summer. I have only ridden my horse once since then. I’m terrified of them, and this article probably didn’t change much about that! -but it will push me in 4-H for photography! I love these pictures of your animals, this has really inspired me i hope someday i’ll overcome my fear of horses too! =D

I am a big Photoshop user but I love using other free programs like Picasa Gimp and Picknic , the most important is that you start with a good photo , I often start my work in Picasa , do some selective modification in Photoshop and then finish the photo in Picknic once it is on Flickr , I just keep the latest a secret ;)

my name is Dana and i love ponies and horses. i am lucky enogh 2 loan a pony called crispin and he is a 13.1 wesh mountin. i have fallen off him a couple of times wich scared me alot (so much so i had to be moved to another pony for 3 months before i could ride him again) the other horse i ride is a 14.3 cob called bobby. he booseted my confodence so much.
im happy that you got over your fear of horses and started to ride again because i know how it feels (but probly in not as much pain as you suffered)
horses can give you so much in life. if you trust them they will trust you back.

Really liked your photos – especially as they were horse related.. Am in the process of upgrading my camera…the little point and shoot digital,(always have it on me) so was interested in what you used. Have horses, sheep, dogs and cat, plus now doing an in house newsletter at a a winery here in NZ and love the photo part and have started using this website..it is such fun and so easy. Your photos gave me inspiration.

Wow! my dog seems to recognize when i have a camera, and he hates it! or, maybe he’s posing, thinking he’s a model, but he refuses to look right at the camera, even if i call him!! i can’t even “trick” him with my cell phone camera, he ALWAYS looks away!

I love your photos…but HOW do you get it to print the way you see it on your computer. Every time I go to print cool photos it is either too bright or too grainy or…..every “cool” effect I do on it prints in a way that distorts the pictures…
please help…ANybody??

I love your photos, especially the ones of the horses, you have a great story as well. Im a college student going for equine studies and love it because I get to see their beauty and how much they can do every day, and of course have had my fair share of falling off- i’ve had a slight fear of jumping for a couple years now & am finally getting that confidence back now. glad you finally got over yours!

Well i never heard that u fell of your spook horse but i love horses too and right now i have 8 horses and been riding on them. I also do the shows which is Michigan Contesting Horse Association (M.C.H.A.) , Team Penning, and High School Rodeo Association. I never fell off my horse cause i am scare of falling off the horse so that y i teach my horse in the round pen, but one of my horse is probley greenbroke horse riding.

Great photos! You brought something different to the table…animal photography. I’m not a farm girl or anything, but I love the horse photo with the rich brown tones and I can barely see the writing across the pic…very cool! My most favorite is the cat photo. I have a cat and this photo makes we want to take my cat out on a photo shoot! I love the cat on the blue car…rich tones in this photo…love it!!

Wow I love your work I’13 years old and also love photoagraphy! I’ve been taking picture for about a year or so. I live in Canada so I have many great shot with all the differant weather. I’ve take over 2000 pictures. I do have family that are photoagrapher tho. I use simple props and family/friends from school. I have been as to do a school photshot and also some friends have put my pictures framed in thier room! :) Well Just thought I would say “hi” and tell you a little bit about me

If you really love horses, I think you MUST approach to them, they’re so special, so magic, so perfect. Don’t leave them, or you will lost a friend , a perfect friend, ever heards, never speaks.
You Don’t love horsees theen. I love them, I fell off them, I saw how a horse was diying in front of me, AND WE NEVER WILL BE APPART!!

Your story really struck a cord with me, I am 19 and have been into photography for about a two years, When I was 16 I got bucked off my horse and broke my back in 2 places, it took about a year and a half but I was able to sum up the courage and ride again, I now ride occasionally but not very often. Photography has become my new hobby and passion. And I found your story very amazing and inspiring! Your photos are amazing, and gave me some great ideas for how to have fun with my horses without the need for a saddle.

You do great work!!! You have a wonderful eye for photography! I’ve used photoshop for years but when I switched from a PC to MAC last year my photoshop doesn’t work with my MAC, so when found this site I was amazed!!! It’s wonderful and easy to use and I don’t really miss photoshop with Picnik around!

WOW!!! I think it is amazing that you can get a picture of something so simple and transform it into something beautiful and i was actually thinking that things so simple can be so pretty and can make the world something so wonderfully different. :) The simple things in life are the most beautiful :)

I am 13 now and love photography! My family is constantly saying thatthey don.t want picures taken of them, but I haven’t given up! I take millions of pictures and go through AA batteries like crazy! I’m glad I so found Picnik.

I’m 13 and i love photagraphy and I was thrown from a horse when it was spooked!!!! Only I fractured 3 bones in my spine! My mom wont let me ride for a little while for obvious reasons, but I cant wait to get back on!

Amazing photos!!! So beautiful. Brings me back almost 30 years to my middle-school days in Oregon when my dream finally came true…”leasing” a horse, (all we could afford), riding every day after school, lessons, mucking stalls, hearing my mare whinny in recognition, horse 4-H, showing a tad, my beloved boots, then finally learning to rodeo as a horse camp counselor.
Now I am a busy mother of 4 on the other coast (preppy Connecticut) where it is strickly dressage and English riding. And the irony: my 3 girls have NO INTEREST in these beautiful creatures.
Love love love to take their pix though and you have inspired me to use Picnik more and lay off my headaches with PS. :)
Congrats on overcoming such a trauma after 3 decades and your success.
