How To #3: Layering

posted by peter Oct 28th, 2008

Brenda, our Community Liaison in Charge of Flickr Operations, has handily put together a short video tutorial on Layering (now in Premium Preview):

As seen in the video, Layering is done through the Photo Basket which can be found at the bottom of your Picnik window while in the Edit or Create tabs.

This was a great tutorial, very clear!
Can you tell us about textures and how to use them? I see all the other issues answered, almost, but the ones about textures. some folks want to know where to get backgrounds and such.

I have some textures already downloaded, but I would like to contol where they DONT go, like over a face for instance, or different textures in different places in the compostition.
    It this possible with picnik?

Thank for all your work in putting this together!

  30. nbsunshine Says:

Wicked thanks! I’ll have to do some testing now! Much appreciated.

  31. Edna Barney Says:

Wonderful. I had not idea how to do that. Thank you Brenda.

  32. Daniel Morehouse Says:

I thought this program was a little pricy because you pay by the year. But for someone who wants quick and steamlined effects I would have to give Picnik a thumbs up. I just bought the premium version and it is easy to use, plus the added features are great. Simplicity is a wonderful thing? I do use Adobe photoshop and for the price it is more than enough for the average user,it is however a little more complex. Today I am exploring all the features ,benefits ,comments and blogs on the web site. P.S. and the archives. Thanks for the fun—Dan

  33. Katlyn Says:

WOW! I love layering, its so cool and helpful.

But I have a problem…the layering video only talkes about using a whole photo to cover the WHOLE space…what if you only want to use a part of a photo, like a stock one, cut out the figure(s) that you want and use that over the background picture but also make it bold?

How do you get the two photos to stick together???

  34. lin Says:

i have premium but i dont see my picnik basket can someone help please

  35. lina Says:

y do u have to have premium for this?

i mean not everybody is allowed to have it for their parents o.O
and my friend payed for it once but didnt get premium, so she had to pay again, u cant exactly trust stuff like tht

  36. Cathy Says:

I have premium and want to use this layering feature but cannot find the Picnik basket. I only have a Photo basket

  37. Sonia Says:

    Hey Cathy and everyone else!

To start layering, open the photo you want on the bottom of the layer. Then in the Edit or Create tab pull up the Photo Basket (located in the bottom left corner of the page) and drag and drop the images you want over the photo and resize them.

    Check out this video tutorial:

    heey it´s the best!!!!!

  39. Dani Stelter Says:

I was wondering if you still offer the layering effect? I have premium, I’ve gone through the tutorials and I still do not see where I have that option. I have no picnik basket, only a photo basket. Can you advise me as to what to do? Is this something you no longer have? Thanks for your help- your site is amazing!! Dani

  40. Krista Says:

You can do this in the FREE version. You do NOT need the Premium to do this. You just need to realize what she’s doing. It does go by awfully fast, so watch it a few times, and look at it REALLY close.

She put one picture on top of another and then used the (Advanced Blending Modes in the Photo Properties box) on the top picture until she found one she liked (Multiply) and it worked great for those two pictures.

It won’t always work like this just any two pictures. Get and use two that are similar to what she used. It worked so well because there was a lot of white area in the top picture that disappeared with the mode she chose (Multiply), leaving the remaining edges blending with the “texture” of the bottom picture to make a really layered look.

Once you see how it worked for her, by doing exactly what she did with similar pictures, then play around and try all the different blending modes on two other pictures. The more you play around with it, the more you’ll start to understand the blending modes. Or even if you don’t understand them, you’ll still come up with some really cool results. :)
