Featured Picniker – Andrea Walisser
Our fifth Featured Picniker, Andrea Walisser, is a redhead. But she’s worthy of being featured in other ways as well. We first noticed her when she submitted three entries to the Flickr Picnikers contest on Best Use of Text. Intrigued, we poked around in the rest of her photo stream, which was handily divided into Picnik Originals and Picnik!. And there we found picture upon picture of Andrea and her lovely girlfriends, using every Picnik effect imaginable (and a fair bit of text, too!), dressed to the nines and out on the town in Vancouver.
Without needing anymore convincing, when we contacted Andrea we discovered that she’s just weeks away from traveling to Northern Ireland to work on her senior undergrad thesis towards her History Honors degree at Simon Fraser University. She also tidily took our emailed list of questions and put them in a tidy Word Doc for us. Honours student, indeed!
Picnik: How did you first hear about Picnik, and when was that?
Andrea: I first heard about it back in April of this year when my friend Allyson added the application on Facebook, and the rest is history!
How has Picnik changed your life?
It’s given me a much more creative outlet for the fine art of procrastination! Not writing papers has never been so fun! I know my fellow students know what I’m sayin’. Also I’ve always been an artistic person but I don’t really have time to do art anymore in the sense of drawing or painting or whatever – Picnik has allowed me to get artsy in an easy way with no mess!
What did you like the most about Picnik when you first started using it, and what do you like the most about it now?
At first I was all about just adding one effect and some generic song lyric text with a tame font, but now I think the thing I like most is finding out how you can manipulate and layer effects, text, and shapes to create totally new looks and give the features of your picture much more depth and intricacy. I’ve gotten more adventurous with that over time. Just start clicking on multiple effects in random orders and see what you come up with! Try to think of creative ways to use the Picnik features in a different way – like if you see an Advanced Mode option anywhere (for example, try Hardlight with Tint and Difference with Text and Shapes – super cool), or some other mysterious pull-down options when you click on a certain effect that you’ve been ignoring so far, click around on all of them and see what they do! (I’m still a sucker for song lyrics, though – they just look cooler now.)

What gets you to pull out your camera?
Two things: one is my friends – they’re my Picnik muses – and the other is really cool scenery, architecture, nature, cities, etc., especially when I’m away somewhere… (I took about a billion pictures during a one-week stay in Puerto Vallarta.) I’m all about the Art Shot, not just point-and-shoot. In that way any cool or beautiful or interesting image I see around me gets me to pull my camera out and start clicking away from all kinds of crazy angles… Sometimes people stare. My Picnik pictures are all about people though; for me they make for the most interesting images.
If any feature of Picnik were to be renamed after you, which would it be?
I don’t think it would be any one feature, but it would probably be the thing you can do where you make an entire picture black and white (or sepia, or tinted, or pixelated, etc., etc.) and then paint over a certain object or part of the picture with the original brush. I’d call it Pleasantville-ish.
What’s your favourite night out?
Any night out with my girls on Granville Street in downtown Vancouver is a great time!
What’s one new feature you wish Picnik could have?
Hmm if I had to give only one suggestion… I wish there was an “original” option for every effect. Ooh, and more effects in general – it would be exciting to work with new stuff! And okay, one more – I would LOVE a way to make different words of text that you add separately the EXACT same colour – it drives me crazy when it’s slightly off, but it’s so hard to get an exact match! Or an undo button for the Doodle tool that doesn’t erase everything you’ve done, just the last thing. And more frames! And a way to somehow overlay pictures over pictures and fade them in and out… Okay. I’ll stop now.
What’s the best Picnik effect for a night on the tiles?
Hmmm, this one’s tough – it depends on the picture. However, I’d say that Holga-ish makes everyone look fantastic. It’s one of my very favourites, although it limits you to black and white. Orton-ish is a good one for club pictures too; it does interesting things with darkness, light, and colour and gives a picture a kind of smoothness or silkiness that can make people look really beautiful. And it makes everyone’s hair Pantene-y, which is always good!

well there IS a way. right click on the text, and click duplicate text, and then change what you want written and then click on another text.

and to answer the question about black & white with some color: go to the effects section and click on black and white. then click the paintbrush tool and click original. then on the picture, paint over the part you want in color…its kinda hard at first to get it perfectly in the lines and what not, but you get the hang of it! hope i helped :)

HELLO ANDREA FANS!
A few tips:
To selectively tint part of your photo:
Go to Create:Effects:Tint, then select the blue paint brush button. Click Reverse Effect and then paint! You can fade this as desired.

For the PURPLE portrait we all love, here are the DIRECTIONS according to Andrea:
Step 1, hit Holga-ish. (When it goes black and white here it created the contrast between the light skin and dark hair and clothes, etc.)
Step 2, hit Vingette.
Step 3, black out the rest of the picture with Doodle.
Step 4 was HDR, I didn’t do anything fancy with the radius, but I faded the strength down to where I wanted it.
Step 5, I tinted it purple.
Step 6, looks like I lightened it up a little, don’t know what I specifically used for that.. probably something in the Edit screen!
*And voila, pop-art! I hope that helps!*
For Premium members, changing the color of your eyes just got easier!:
Open you photo and go to Create:Touch Ups. At the very top select Eye Color and then choose your color preference, now paint the tint over the irises of your subject!

nice idea, to divide originals picnik’s photos from the modified… I’m going to do the same, before it will be too late to do that because of the number of photos.
