Featured Picniker – Jordan Stubbs
Our fourth Featured Picniker is Jordan Stubbs, a 15-year old high school student living in central Georgia. With his dad in the air force, Jordan has lived all over the world, including Guam, Australia, and Germany. He’s first chair alto sax in the school band, is an AP student, and a committed Picnik user. Obviously he’s going places.
We first noticed him on Flickr, where his Picnik-tagged photos started quickly piling up. Then we noticed him participating in our Flickr Picnikers group’s contests, and we noticed, “This kid’s really good!” Especially considering his first Picniked photograph was only added to Facebook on May 28. The way he uses the full range of Picnik tools, from the Effects to Text, Shapes, and Frames, demonstrate he can use Picnik based on the needs of an individual photo, creating a body of work that’s incredibly diverse and creative. He also takes the most wonderful photos of his little sister, which just melts our sibling-hearts. The fact that he’s been doing this for such a short time only makes him more worthy of being featured, since he’s walking proof of how easy it is to achieve photo editing awesomeness even for someone without a lot of photography experience using Picnik for the first time. Plus he’s hilarious. Another perfect candidate for Featured Picniker!
1. How did you first hear about Picnik, and when was that?
In May of this year. My friend Heather had sent me a pic that she had edited on Picnik. It was one with selective saturation.I thought it was amazing and I asked how and where, and that is when I first learned of picnik.
2. How has Picnik changed your life?
I have started taking more pictures and I have upped the seriousness and artistic qualitities of the images. photography has become my new favorite “thing” that I do. It’s also another outlet for me to express myself, it’s another way to just chill.
3. What did you like the most about Picnik when you first started using it, and what do you like the most about it now?
The first technique I ever attempted was the selective coloring. I thought it was amazing!! Now I have no particular favorite, I usually just do what the picture calls for, but I usually always include some cross processing and maybe some boosting.
4. What do you use to shoot with?
A camera, silly.
No, seriously I use an Olympus FE230 that I got for christmas last year. It works just fine, and with some editing any picture can look great, no matter what camera is used.
5. Heroes or Lost?
BOTH! Definitely both.
6. What inspires you to pull out your camera?
Nothing really stands out for me. I just see something that I think would make a cool pic and I go “ooohhh, picture time” (or something to that effect). I do enjoy macro images, but then again sky pics are cool too, but again, I have no real preference. Also, most of my pics are just what I see, nothing is really planned or manipulated, it just is. I’m not too big on taking pics of people just yet, but I may start soon.
7. If any feature of Picnik were to be renamed after you, which would it be?
Well… maybe Jordan-ize. it’s the only one that really fits, plus i really like the Posterize option. so we’ll say Jordan-ize.
8. You’ve been all over the world. Which place would you most like to go back to with a camera and Picnik?
Well I’m sure Guam would have the great tropical locations. Australia would have the open skies and deserts and such, I actually lived in a small town named Woomera in the middle of the outback, great for picture taking. Then Germany has the rolling hills and flowers and windmills and everything. I really couldn’t choose one in particular. I wish I would have gotten into photography sooner.
9. Picnik prides itself on being green (it’s not just the color of our grassy borders!), and you’ve recently started your family on a greener path. What’s one thing you wished everyone would do to be more green?
I’m really big on the halogen lightbulbs. They just make sense, they last for so much longer than traditional lightbulbs, and they’re so much more efficient. Also recycling is a big plus for the Earth, and although it’s slightly more hassle, it’s just worth it.
10. What’s one new feature you wish Picnik could have?
I don’t even know if this is possible, but a selective HDR-ish tool. Sometimes I just want to make one thing go POP, but then the whole background goes POP too, completely defeating the purpose. Also an eraser for the doodle option, but that’s nothing TOO important. Overall, Picnik is the perfect picture editing website.

faith: it’s selective saturation (i think). you press the paint brush on the black and white option and press the [original] button, or put it on [reverse effect] and and [effect].
it makes more sense if you just try. experiment.

Stellar job on the photo editing. I love the simplicity of the pictures, but also the intricate detail. I totally love how you had only the glasses edited that certain way… that was pretty psychedelic.
I have a waterproof camera that takes some pretty groovy underwater pics, and i can’t wait to edit some on piknik… any ideas?
Also, just wondering, do you prefer editing pictures of people or objects???
On a side note, I read your interview, and I love how you’re encouraging your family to go green and how environmentally involved you are!!!

Geez! Awesome pictures! I’m very amazed that, as a high school guy, you have the patience and the eye for taking pictures. Most guys that I go to school with I couldn’t even imagine them being photographers.

i love ur pictures they r so beautifull! =) i love to take pictures myself sometime i will find myself taking picture of the sky when im riding in the car =) hehe i know its kinda dorkish but im alot like u. when i see something pretty i just go o that would look like an awesome picture and snap a shot of it =) i have gotten a ton of cute pics like that. my sisters call me a picturealoilic =) hehe i also like to draw im ok at it and i draw what i think i would see in a picture . . . one time i drew one of my bf and i kissing in the rain at a skate park =) it looked way better then i thought =) but no since i broke up with him all i can draw is said things and i take sad pictures =( my sister says that i should stop bring myself down because she love to see my beautiful pictures and drawings that i used to do! im not that bad looking and i can take some pretty good pics oh me . . . i think they r my favorite kind of picture to take =) i had a good digital camera but it got stolen =( i was so mad but they i got one of the really old fasion ones and it takes really good picture too =)
well im sitting in math so i better get back to work!!
p.s. and i agree the eraser on the doddle would be great =) I LOVE PICNIK.COM!!!

If you use a version of Paint Shop Pro in conbination with Picnik you can make just that one thing “go POP” by using one of the tools available on PSP(a least PSP6). As long as you have the original and the edited version, you’e set.

i also travel (but, in asian countries only like thailand,malaysia,indonesia,singapore,hongkong,macau..etc…),take pictures, and edit pictures too…

Hello Jordan! haha… my-oh-my, you have gained popularity!! Not surprising seeing as you are an amazing photographer. I am really into photography as well- I am taking it right now and earlier this year I learned traditional 35mm photography. I learned how to develop and enlarge our negatives. There is a great sense of accomplishment with traditional photography, because at any step of the way our film could be exposed or ruined. Have you tried traditional photography? It is obviously not as much fun as digital though because you can’t create superb pictures like you did.
Anywho, you remind me a lot of myself- I am a hardcore environmental advocate, I love photography, and I have traveled a lot too! Oh, and I am 16! Are you a freshman or a sophomore? I am very proud of your work and I will try to show you some of mine sometime(not that it is anything worth seeing compared to yours :)

Aww I luv that jump pic. I think it’s so cool ur into the enviroment, and recycling and stuff. Ur so lucky to have lived in all those places. I really want to go to Australia, but unfortunately am stuck in the borders of Canada. *sigh*

So there are a million comments already but wow I’m 15 and I’m not really into portraits of people yet either and I do the same thing just if something looks like it’ll make an awesome picture I just whip out my camera and take pictures. i live overseas too, and although ive never lived in Georgia, ive been all over south east asia and there are so many amazing scenes. i think that going all over the place really gives lots of inspiration, as well as lots of different kinds of photos and editing. thats what i think is so cool about your editing style, that you use lots of different medias and scenes.

You have Awesome pictures! I’m very amazed that, as a high school guy, you have the patience for taking pictures like that. Most guys that I go to school with I couldn’t even imagine them being photographers. Most of them don’t take any pictures.
