Featured Picniker – Katie McDonough
Our first Featured Picniker is a nineteen-year-old Canadian student. Katie McDonough came to the attention of Team Picnik late last summer, after we launched on Facebook. The fact that she’s a perfect representation of a Facebook Picniker hadn’t nearly as much to do with it as did the fact that she’s amazingly talented, and was instantly taking the sorts of pictures any other university student has in spades, and using Picnik to create beautiful, lyrical, poetic creations with them.
Because of her talent and because she was using Picnik exactly how some of us dreamed our users would, and because she’s been with us since the beginning of our relationship with Facebook, Katie soon became a sort of icon for us, an archetype for everything a Facebooking Picniker can be, and everything our users can be capable of. So, of course, we had to feature her for our inaugural Featured Picniker post.
A student at the University of New Brunswick and a native of the port city of Saint John, across the Bay of Fundy from Nova Scotia, Katie is taking a bachelor of arts, with plans to become a teacher. As Team Picnik quickly discovered, she’s easiest to get ahold of through her Facebook account, where she’s got 11 groups, 600 friends, and 93 photo albums. So we asked her a few questions.
Katie first heard of Picnik about this time last year, right around the time Picnik launched on Facebook. “I just found it while looking for a good distraction from studying for exams. Success.” When we asked her how it has changed her life, she quips, “It’s brought me from rags to riches,” then adds, laughing, “Not really, but it surely gives me a place to get creative and share some of my stuff I come up with in my spare time. Boredom is never an option when Picnik’s around.” Of her friends, she says she’s started “quite a few of them, actually!” using Picnik, and she uses a little Sony Cybershot, “which has been through its share of hardships, including a little dip into a lake.”
Have her favourites changed since she started using Picnik a year ago? “At first, I lived for the Duo-Tone effect, but now I rarely edit a picture without the presence of Cross Process or Cinema Scope. Those two are genius. I always throw a little bit of text into most of my pictures too.” Where are her influences in her work? “I’ve been inspired by a lot of my friends’ photography actually. You don’t need a big, expensive camera and a Hawaiian beachfront property to find a gorgeous photo op; although, it would be nice.”
We asked her, if any feature of Picnik were to be renamed after her, which one would it be? “Oooh I’d probably have to go for “Photo Pixel-Kate [for pixelate]“, since my name sort of fits in there!” Heroes or Lost? “I actually don’t watch much TV at all. I’m more of a music kinda gal.” If Picnik were a character in either, “If I watched either… Picnik would be the best characters in each show!”
We asked her what is one new feature she wishes she could have. “Well in all honesty, and not trying to sound cliché, but I couldn’t think of one more thing to add to Picnik. It has everything you need for a great photo-editing frenzy.” And finally, we wanted to know how it feels to be probably the most often mentioned Picnik user ever in Picnik World Headquarters. Katie demurs, and says she can’t wrap her head around it, considering how many talented people there are using Picnik besides her. “I’m no superstar, but it definitely feels incredible to be looked at in such a cool light!”

I’ve been using Picnik for a while now. It’s a great piece of software :) I just wish it could be integrated straight into Flickr so I can touch up my photos right there :D

You truly are so creative! Starting from the pictures you choose to tinker with, to the professional looking images you end up with – there really are endless possibilities to what you can do with a picture if you know what you’re doing!

Wow, these are truly inspirational. I have been experimenting with Picnik practically the day they launched…and my editing skills have been slightly improving from day to day. this lets me know that there is true beauty in the world, all you have to do is look.

I have used Picnik and Fotoflexer and other photo editing sites for a couple months now and I am getting better at deciding what would look best on certain pictures.
Hopefully I can keep fooling around until I get it right. lol

Katie, Wow.
When you actually break it down, the shots are good but when we see the final result it’s awesome. You take the simplest pictures and turn them into a work of art.
I didn’t know you could make all these in just picnik.

To jenifer above of me, to colour the eyes, use tint. but reverse the effect and ajust the brush size.

You are so good at editing and taking pictures! I just started into photography about a month ago….I think I’m getting the hang of it, but would love any advice you could give me! I really like the ‘whisper’ one, and the ‘ocean’ one as well. How many times you eat during a normal … every day life?
are you the type of person who eats a bit and often?
or rarely and too much?
i usually have 3 and i’m the 2nd type of person (though it’s not that healthy)
8 am breakfast
3pm lunch
9pm a snack.

What would you do if the internet crashed for good? Would you get used to life with less communication and less “being connected” or would you be pretty bummed for the rest of your life?
This is assuming it was not fixed. Perhaps some largescale EMP attack or something that crippled it for the next 50+ years or so.
