freaky friday
I’ve spent a little time around boats. You eventually discover that the entire maritime industry is superstitious. Big, burley men get very serious when you inadvertently violate one of these invisible taboos. One of the bigger superstitions that I ran into was basically the idea that doing anything significant on a Friday was fraught with peril. The boat yard that I spent time at refused to launch any of their boats on a Friday. Many of the boaters that I ran into would always work their cruising schedules so that they didn’t leave port on Friday, especially for a long voyage.
Being a sailor at heart, it seemed prudent to push the release back until Monday. It’ll be worth the short wait. Among other things, the new release will have even more creative tools and much better support for lower resolution screens.
In other news, you may have noticed that Adobe announced their plans to move Flex into open source. Many of you have (correctly) surmised that we’re built on Flex. We are huge fans of the Flash platform we were impressed to see Adobe open source Flex. Atta boy, Adobe!

I noticed that a few effects were available yesterday that are no longer available today. Will the Lomo effect be part of the release on Monday? I just want to say that while I think that every feature of picnik is awesome, the Lomo effect quickly became my favorite just from the few pictures I edited with it yesterday.

There are three new effects: Lomo, Heat Map and Duo-Tone. The plan is to have it out by tomorrow afternoon, Seattle time. I’ll be sure to post to the blog either way.
The Lomo effect is prety cool! It was created by Peter and the other two by Brian (I think?). I’ve been having lots of fun with the Duo-Tone effect. Another cool thing in this build is added ability to easily created buddy icons. More details later in the release notes.

Just thought your “friday launch” superstition was interesting… I was just out on a boat my parents just bought in Annapolis. We headed out on friday and sprung a huge gas leak that blasted diesel all over the bay and made everyone at the marina angry. Total disaster.
Fridays are now reserved for beer while hanging safely at the dock.
BTW awesome work so far. When did you guys start work on this?

Just as Friday’s should be — more beer less diesel.
We’ve been working on Picnik for about 16 months or so.
